■ The inner wagons on the ore trains between Immingham and Scunthorpe do not have rotary couplers at each end. Instead, all inners have a rotary coupling at one end (painted orange) and a fixed coupling at the other (painted grey). Half of the outer wagons are fitted with rotary couplings, the other half have fixed ones and that end is coloured to suit. Steve Thompson, Scunthorpe
■ THE reader’s memory of seeing the full ’Coronation Scot’ train passing along the West Coast Main Line near Warrington in 1942 (August issue) must be misremembered. The three 1937-built sets were laid up for the Second World War, two at Horwich and one at Lostock Hall, the coaches re-entering general service in 1947 but not as set trains. John Macnab, Falkirk
