Memories of Angerstein Wharf

I have just received the June 2022 issue and must correct the caption to the picture on page 341. What you see are the lines from Lewisham towards London. The picture is taken from platform 3 on the line from Blackheath. The lines on the far left are from Hayes, Sevenoaks and Dartford via Sidcup. The lines going up the incline are for Holborn Viaduct, Blackfriars and Victoria whereas the right-hand pair is for London Bridge, Waterloo East, Charing Cross and Cannon Street. The line towards Deptford leaves the lines from London before New Cross and goes on towards Dartford.

Take the train for the boat

As the photographer of the scene at Stranraer on p109 of your February issue I thought I should offer a correction to the caption in the interests of accuracy. The train shown is the 7.30pm Thursday night ‘Northern Irishman’ from Euston on arrival soon after 5.00am on Friday 4th June 1965. The original slide labelled it as the down train but it seems Colour-Rail wrongly catalogued it as up. No.45126 worked the train from Carlisle. The Caledonian Princess left for Larne at 7.00am.

Blyth spirit

Iain Kitt’s excellent article (june) raises the old old conundrum about how to value what one already has, whereas to replace it later would be prohibitively expensive. At the same time the idea that the nationalised railway industry was responsible for ‘’operating the railways as to make them pay’’ – something demanded, as far as I know, of no other national institution – the police, the prison continue to make a commercial profit on their depleted and run-down assets.
