In recent years, the contribution of African American arts to America’s visual culture has begun to receive the recognition it deserves. As well as paintings, woodcarvings, basket weaving and pottery, artforms also include textiles such as quilts.

African American quilts vary hugely in their compositions, but common features include: the use of strips; unpredictable geometry, such as asymmetry and changing scales; improvisation; and bright colours.
