he Oscars were quite the event this year, but drama aside, it was a great year, won the Academy Award for Actor in a Supporting Role ( also won two Academy Awards for Best Picture and Writing). The film is about a mostly deaf family, with the exception of a daughter named Ruby who is not deaf, and is interested in a career in singing. Her dad, Frank, smokes a joint on a dock in one scene, in which Ruby responds by signing, “We’re in public!” Frank plainly responds: “It’s medical.” Ruby retorts with, “I don’t think being deaf makes it legal to spark a fatty.” In his acceptance speech, Kotsur dedicates the Academy Award win to “the deaf community, the community, and the disabled community. This is our moment. I won.”
