April Show Schedule Reveals Hobby Alive and Well

After the pandemic lock-downs for 2020/2021, this year’s month of April, always a mighty packed month where show scheduling is concerned here in Wisconsin, provided inviting opportunities for local show outings. Over a time frame of three weeks and a day, I worked in attendance at a quartet of local shows, plus four days of Central States attendance down in Schaumburg, Ill., a bonus thrown in for good measure.

First up was attendance at the 66th annual Fox Valley Coin Club spring show down in Appleton, a traditional “Palm Sunday Show,” this year hosted at the Hilton Paper Valley Hotel in the downtown area. This event had succumbed to COVID the past two years, after having been hosted at the Darboy Club on the east side the previous eight years. I can recall at least six or seven other locations that served as venues for this venerable show over the previous 55 years.

Travelling alone on this occasion, it was about 8:30 a.m. when I left home for the 47-mile drive to the venue. Arriving there at about 9:30 a.m., I was greeted by a very vibrant bourse, one that was so packed from 10 to 11 a.m. that it was next to impossible to worm one’s way up to explore the offerings of tabled dealers. The dealer count was certainly in keeping with that experienced in recent years, but the layout of the bourse was relatively more spacious.

The first familiar face encountered upon entering the show was that of Bob Chambers from Green Bay, treasurer of journal for the past ten years.

The coin shortages of the mid-1960s led to some interesting suggestions on how to solve the problem. It’s hard to believe that one of those was to return to a time of fractional currency that grew up from the Civil War. A nonbylined article, “When Pa
