BLAST FROM THE PAST
I have just read Simon Garnham’s recommendation for The Shooting Man’s Bedside Book(Almanac, 30 March). Coincidentally, I am reading the same book, but my copy has on the flysheet, in ink in my mother’s handwriting, “Xmas 1948”. Elsewhere in the book is printed: “This book, first printed in 1948, is produced in complete conformity with the authorised economy standards... etc”. The pages are rather thin and fragile. How times have changed.
I agree with Simon’s comments.
