All about a baby

We’ve all been crazy in love, but while some women wear their partner’s hoodie or tee, Lesedi Moloi (Keabetswe Motsilanyane) went a little extra and stole the sperm of a man she wasn’t even in a relationship with – Fikani (Nicholas Nkuna) in November 2021 – before leaving Hillside to look after her ill father Jacob Moloi (the late Patrick Shai).

Lesedi’s been obsessed with doctor Alexa’s (Carina Nel) hubby Fikani for some time and even tried to stop their wedding in July 2021. But while Fikani and Alexa heaved a sigh of relief earlier this year when Lesedi returned to town pregnant, the drama is only beginning. “Lesedi had some health complications during her pregnancy. She also fainted at her babyshower recently and acting on instinct, guest Alexa realised that Lesedi was in diabetic shock and gave her insulin. Lesedi was then diagnosed with gestational diabetes due to her pregnancy,” says Keabetswe.

A GOOD MOTHER

The method in which Lesedi conceived her child is unorthodox to say the least, having gotten a tip-off from hospital administrator Khethiwe (Sesethu Ntombela) that Fikani’s sperm sample was left “unguarded”. But deep down, Lesedi just wants to be a mother. “She is desperate to be a good mom for her child. Nothing about this process has been routine or regular, but that isn’t holding her back,” adds the actress, hinting that there’s more drama coming.

PLAYING PREGNANT

Actors are often vocal about interactions with people in real life. While some are confronted by viewers for their villain characters’ actions on-screen, Keabetswe reveals that she’s been fortunate. “Our fans don’t really expect to see me with a belly when I’m out of character. Instead they joke about how rude Lesedi is ‘due to hormones’, it’s quite entertaining.” She adds that “playing this pregnant version of my character is quite fun actually! Lesedi is always poised, prim and proper, now waddling around, eating sommer anything, sitting with her legs slightly apart to accommodate the tummy. I’m enjoying it. The most interesting part was deciding what kind of pregnancy behaviour this character will have.”

While not defending Lesedi’s actions, Kea does understand why she did what she did. “Lesedi’s life isn’t easy and she tackles it head-on. Right or wrong, she stands up for what she believes in. She always goes for it!”
