Skills Workshop Shadow Work

Shadow work is an embroidery technique that must be worked on a lightweight, sheer or semi-sheer fabric. We’ve used organdie for this goldfish design, but other suitable choices of fabric are batiste, Georgette, lawn, muslin, organza and voile. The sheerer the fabric, the more vivid the shadow work will appear. The stitch used is essentially Backstitch, but it is worked alternately between two lines. This method forms Herringbone Stitch on the reverse, which shows through the fabric creating a shadowy effect on the right side of the hoop –
