mong the most picturesque of Dominica’s 365 rivers, the tidal and brackish Indian River’s mouth was once a Carib ‘Indian’ settlement; hence the name. From just south of Portsmouth, large rowing boats make regular trips up the river; first through marshland where migrating birds come in the winter, and then through a tunnel of vegetation dominated by spectacular buttressed Bwa Mang trees. It’s a productive fish nursery.
