Enlivening the hallways and other areas of Victorian and Edwardian houses, tiled floors are both practical and attractive. Created to imitate the floors found in medieval ecclesiastical buildings, they’re formed using plain geometric tiles of varying shapes, sizes and colours, mixed with patterned encaustic tiles decorated with inlaid coloured clays. In service areas, relatively inexpensive quarry tiles served a practical rather than aesthetic purpose.
