1 Steel-frame windows and doors

Why it’s popular Steel-frame windows and doors add a classic industrial theme to a home and they’re being used everywhere – from sliding doors that make open-plan spaces more cosy to shower screens.

“Steel frames are thin yet strong, which results in less obstruction of natural light and better views,” says Wynand Smit of Jambmax. These are not only popular in new builds, they’re frequently ordered for renovation projects too, adds Johan Kriel of JM Steel Construction. “They’re an especially popular choice when homeowners replace older frames that haven’t been well maintained,” he says. “This is because they offer a simple, timeless look. They also suit a variety of styles and can be designed in different ways; you can request more detail for a French-style home or standard squares for an industrial look. If treated (galvanised or powder-coated), steel frames can last a lifetime.”

Cost From R500/m2, depending on the design

Top tip “Keep costs to a minimum by buying frames in standard sizes, instead of having them custom made,” says Wynand.

[GOOD TO KNOW]

• If you live near the coast, have your steel frames galvanised rather than powder-coated to ward off rust.

• Steel frames are stronger than traditional aluminium frames and can hold thicker glass.
