A record number of humpback whales were observed off Japan’s Amami-Oshima Island between December 2021 and March 2022. Humpbacks spend their summers off the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia and migrate south to waters around Amami and Okinawa Prefecture in the winter breeding season.
According to the Amami Whale and Dolphin Association, the number of whales is up 60 per cent on last season’s count of 1,097. Association chairman Katsuki Oki
