After a disappointing weekend in Qatar, Fabio Quartararo put his Monster Energy Yamaha M1 on pole position in the qualifying session at this new circuit. Lining up alongside him on the top spots were the Pramac Ducatis of Jorge Martin and Johann Zarco in second and third places respectively. In the morning warm-up prior to the race, Marc Marquez suffered a nasty highside astride his Repsol Honda, after which he was declared unfit to race.
