Stitching Around the World

As I’ve noted before on these pages, Scottish samplers are admired throughout the world for their distinctive motifs and use of color. They often combine representations of distinct styles and motifs that reflect their unique culture, including the Scots national emblem: the Scottish thistle.

The Peacock Band design in this issue is based on two motifs from the 1854 Ann Hardie needlework sampler—the peacock and the Scottish thistle.
