It’s an age-old problem – we want our tots to tuck into their veggies, but many of them bolt at the sight of a steaming broccoli floret or heap of spinach. So what is the best way to develop a happy, healthy attitude towards these superfoods and why do children resist?
“Babies and toddlers tend to have a more sensitive sense of smell and taste than older children and adults, and some veggies have quite a strong flavour and odour, so this can be off-putting,” explains Johannesburg dietitian Sue Scharf.
“As a rule of thumb, mildly flavoured foods are preferred, so the more bland the vegetable, the better. Fruits are often preferred for this reason too,” she continues.
