The Capri was a master stroke. At a time when buyers were generally offered a stark choice between boring saloons and impractical sports cars, the new Ford offered them the best of both worlds. There was a long bonnet that hinted at enormous power, flamboyant styling details and interiors that eschewed wood and leather for modern vinyl and plastics, but there was also seating for four, a modest but usable boot and a solid roof. The icing on the cake was a low sticker price allied to modest running costs.

Of course, that sticker price could be increased dramatically once a prospective buyer had dived into the options and accessories catalogue, but the Capri still represented remarkably good value for money. In a large part, that’s because it was
