New car designs do not happen overnight, and it takes many years to move from initial thoughts to the showroom floor. This is as true for Ford as it is for any major manufacturer, so it wouldn’t have taken long after the launch of the 105E Anglia before thoughts turned to a successor. This must have been something of a confusing time because cars like the Mini and the BMC 1100s were blazing a trail for front-wheel drive, while the rear engine/RWD layout was also gaining ground across Europe for small car offerings.
