When Ford first started thinking about a replacement for the sidevalve 100E in 1956, they also had another problem to solve. The bargain basement was taken care of by the upright 103E Popular, and the 100E Anglia and Prefect were doing very well in the small car sector. Above them, the Mk2 Consul and Zephyr were going down a storm with buyers in the market for a mid-to-large car, but Ford had nothing to offer in the medium car class.

The Consul Classic was the car intended to fill this gap. It was being designed concurrently with the 105E Anglia, which partly explains the reverse rake rear screen. The rest of the styling was all its own though, and was both
