TOMMY FYNN

By the middle of his 20s, Tommy had set his sights on Los Angeles, and went on to establish himself as a Street League-worthy contest crusher and an insanely consistent street skater. After five years soaking up all the glitz, glamour and grit that LA had to offer, he decided to return to Brissy and put down roots. Freshly married and feeling healthy, Tommy is now diligently filming for his part in a new full-length Plan B video. It was a hot day in Brissy when I called Tommy for his interview. He was having a rest day, setting up a fresh board and doing some stretches, committing himself to attack the streets like a beast over the weekend.

Hey, Tommy. How’s it going? What have you been up to today?

Hey, man. I’m doing well. Today and yesterday have been pretty hot. It’s ruthless skating during the day in the heat and battling tricks. You get so burnt. It’s gnarly. But today’s been mellow. I’ve been street skating a lot and today’s a rest day. I’ve been a little bit sore after battling tricks. I’m just setting up a board and getting ready to go street skating tomorrow.

Do you have many rest days?

For sure, I can’t skate every day. It depends though. If I’m jumping down something, I get super sore from that and I’ll take a rest day the next day. I’d say I skate five or sometimes six days a week. I still skate quite a bit. These days you’ve also got a lot of recovery stuff, like Theraguns, and that helps a lot. I’ve definitely learned over the years how to stretch and help my body so that I’m not stiff on those days. I’ve gotten better at managing it.

Not like when you’re a kid and you just skated until you couldn’t skate anymore.

Exactly, when you’re a kid, you don’t know anything. You just skate super hard, and don’t drink water, and don’t eat decent food and get so sore. But getting older, I’ve learned to manage that.

You’re back from LA and living in Brissy these days. How’s that?

“I was 22nd in the world. So I was two spots off being in the Olympics. Everyone thought I was going – I thought I was going.”

Yeah, I’m living back in Brisbane. It’s been awesome. I’m stoked
