SAM SUTTON

“I’m going to hate this”, Sam Sutton tells me as we sit down to conduct this interview. I’m already well aware. I’ve known Sam since he was seven or eight, having grown up one suburb from his hometown of Forresters Beach on the Central Coast of NSW. It’s a sleepy surf town. Since joining the Nike SB Australia team last August, Sam has spent two stints in the US, filmed his first proper video part, competed in the Tampa Am, been invited to Olympic skate camps, and shot the entire interview you’re about to flick through. With that in mind, it’s difficult to believe that he’s still just 17 years old. A bright future awaits, and Sam will continue to do most of his talking on a skateboard. Enjoy this dialogue in the meantime.

First of all, congrats on becoming the ‘Australian Street Skateboarding Champion’ yesterday!

[Laughs] Yeah, thanks. Is that really what they called it?

Yeah, the contest you won yesterday was the final and that was the title.

I seriously didn’t even know that. Did people have to qualify for it? It was at my local park and the prize was $2100, so of course I went. I’m so stoked. No actual street skateboarding required [laughs].

How was it filming for Medley, your first proper video project?

Stressful, but it’s been equally as rewarding. I’m super grateful to be involved in such an amazing project with such amazing dudes. Honestly, I’m just stoked to be a part of it all, because for a good while I was skating with the Sydney
