A little star from Hungary
IS ET back? No! It’s a Budapester or short-face (which merely means short-beaked) Budapest tumbler. This is one of the smallest breeds of fancy or show pigeon, some being little larger than a blackbird, with a lively temperament and unique features.
The first question most people ask is, do they tumble? And the answer is no. This is one of the 70 breeds of Continental tumbler, depicted in Henry Pyrzakowski’s Book of Continental Tumbler Standards (first printed in 1987), very few of which “tumble”, as most are now kept primarily for exhibition and not for flying ability.
Many fancy breeds of pigeon were formerly “flying”, many exhibition pigeons are still competent flyers. I once had to arrange to retrieve from Heathrow Airport an exhibition Budapester that I had sold to a London fancier, after it had been reported flying in and out of local office buildings.
