A short history of suspension damping

In the beginning there was nothingness. That is, just springs but no suspension damping. Drivers in early auto races were often killed when their bouncing, bucking vehicles leapt off of rough roads. In 1902 Mors adopted hydraulic dampers to absorb such unwanted suspension energy.
The simplest design was the Andre or Hartford dry-friction scissors damper. One arm of the damper attached to the chassis, the other to an axle. At the pivot, a miniature clutch was compressed
