Sole survivor

Nepean Raceway Castlereagh, Sydney NSW

Over the years there have been literally dozens of dirt-surfaced Short Circuit tracks in the Sydney area. Today there is but one; Nepean Raceway at Rickards Road, Castlereagh. The circuit celebrated its half-century in 2009, but the origins of the venue go back even further.

Around 1957, Geoff Coombs, who had competed in the Isle of Man Clubmen’s TT in the mid ‘fifties, formed a group called the Sydney Associated Clubs – a consortium of ten Sydney motorcycle clubs, which held regular meetings in a room behind George Adams’ motorcycle shop in Guildford. At this time, several Short Circuits were in operation; Riverstone, Bossley Park, Vineyard (Windsor), Arcadia, Forest Glen (Glenorie), The Birches (Belrose), Cross Roads (Liverpool) among them. But everything changed with the introduction of the dreaded NSW Speedways Act which came into force in 1959 and required
