PHAROAH SANDERS

Live In Paris (1975) [Transversales]

When he played tenor with John Coltrane in the 1960s, Sanders’ playing was wild and his tone was wincingly harsh. Listen to his playing on Alice Coltrane’s 1971 ‘Journey in Satchidananda’, and you’d barely credit it as being the same performer. Transversales Disques has now re-released Live In Paris from 1975. With Sanders was Danny Mixon (organ/piano), Calvin Hill (bass) and Greg Bandy (drums). Although there are occasionally glimpses of his 60s persona, Sanders’ solos are mostly beautifully melodic and lyrical, with the lyricism enhanced by the structure of the music, which mostly he almost predicts the arrival of smooth jazz, giving us a taste of where he would be later in the decade. Listen to this one.
