Spare a thought for refugees this year

Once again, we approach the end of a year that has taken us through the gamut of emotions. And, with everything that’s happened, the event I’ll never forget witnessing is the desperation of people attempting to flee Afghanistan following the Taliban’s recapture of the country.

At times such as Christmas, my mind turns to thoughts of people displaced through war, famine and other tragedies. But what of those who do escape? How does someone come to terms with fleeing from everything they know in order to survive?

For some, food becomes a vital connection to home and heritage – the ingredients, smells and memories.

Here, three former refugees speak about the importance of the food of their culture, and how sharing it with others is an important part of reconnecting.
