First off, it’s important to clarify the term ‘artificial sweeteners’, as it is a broad concept. Simply put, there are two categories: chemical-based and nonchemical (natural) sweeteners.
Chemical-based artificial sweeteners include aspartame, acusulphame K and sucralose. These compounds destroy a lot of our healthy gut bacteria, which can result in the development of IBS and leaky gut syndrome.
