HUDSWELL CLARKE DIESELS IN NEW ZEALAND

Early in 1936, New Zealand’s Public Works Department (PWD) ordered twelve 4-w diesel mechanical type ‘D29’ locomotives from the Leeds firm of Hudswell Clarke, built to the PWD’s own specification, writes Phil Barnes.
These locos, which strictly speaking were tractors (Trs), were classified as Trs - whilst others received new numbers in 1948 when the PWD became the Ministry of Works.
