Whilst Afghanistan was a dangerous place for LGBTQI people before the Taliban regained control on 15 August 2021, since that day the situation has grown increasingly devastating. The international spotlight on the country has mostly faded from mainstream coverage, but LGBTQI Afghans are facing an increased surge in violence, rape and wrongful detention.
In January, OutRight Action International and Human Rights Watch released a 43-page report based on 60 interviews with LGBTQI Afghans, revealing the brutal reality. Some interviewees reported threats and violence from their own families
