The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon was not a riot of fun. Only 100 goals were scored in the 52 games of the tournament, an average of just1.92 per match. Only four tournaments in Africa Cup of Nations history have averaged fewer goals, all of which were much smaller tournaments. While that certainly gives lie to the lazy stereotypes of naive African defending, it also raises an important question: why?
