With no human life for miles, we’re exploring an abandoned police station covered with alien goo, strange creatures that will try to kill us on sight, and… even more strange creatures that will try to kill us on sight. We wouldn’t usually revisit such a place in a hurry, yet that’s exactly what we’re asked to do repeatedly.
An FPS cake of revisiting the same areas, but some neat tricks are employed to keep things unpredictable. For example, the placement of enemies, and the destructible nests that respawn them, is randomised each time. The layout of Sprawl – the black goop that pervades each map – also differs each time. The importance of this goes beyond aesthetics, as Sprawl not only slows you down, it speeds up and empowers enemies.
