Is John Lewis allowed to repair laptop under warranty?

Q When I returned a faulty Microsoft Surface Pro 7 laptop (pictured) bought from John Lewis under the retailer’s two-year warranty, I thought I’d get a replacement or perhaps a partial refund. However, John Lewis returned it to Microsoft for a repair, saying that was its policy. Was it right to do so?
