NOTABLE SIETAS SHIPS ENDING THEIR DAYS

I very much enjoyed the magnificent overview of the ships constructed over the years by the Hamburg shipyard of J.J. Sietas (SM, June 2021). During a recent visit to Cyprus, we enjoyed a spectacular view from our hotel room, which included fine views of a Sietas-built vessel.

Named Dimitrios II, she started life in 1964 as the German-operated Arn X. Subsequently she was renamed Luhe, Tor Nordia, Luhedeich, Sofia S, Anastasia and, finally, Dimitrios II. As the Honduran-flagged Dimitrios II, she encountered heavy weather and grounded on 23 March 1998 on a reef, some distance from the shore near Paphos on Cyprus, during a voyage from Chalkis, Greece to Limassol and Syria with a cargo of wood.
