In response to Bill Keene’s excellent article on SS Rotterdam (SM, Jan), I thought I would share a couple of photographs I took during a recent stay on the iconic ship. During my stay, my attention was drawn to moored to the old Holland America Pier, which is just round the corner from where Rotterdam is berthed, which was hosting the newly-built 181,000gt cruise ship MSC Euribia. I was struck by the contrasting appearances of the two shops, and particularly by the difference between the sterns of the vessels, new and old, which is quite considerable.
A visit to SS Rotterdam is highly recommended. Since coming under the care of a large Hotel Group, the ship has been well looked after and maintained to a high standard. The rooms are large, well appointed and comfortable, and offer great views over the river and the city skyline, especially from the restaurant, which is a wonderful place to be seated if a large cruise ship, such as Euribia, happens to depart.
There are two main tours on the ship, one for the Upper Decks and one
