Explore partial abstraction in your art

ll paintings are made up of an abstract arrangement of shapes and colours, although you might have to get really close to a representational painting to see it in this way. One of the things that excites me in painting is the tension between the illusion of depth, or realism, and the material substance of the paint on a surface. At what point does one swap over from the other? Can you appreciate both at the same time? Looking at paintings in little squares on Instagram is akin to standing back and viewing a painting from a reasonable distance – you can recognise the subject depicted and it has a believable space.
