Fallow Deer
Physical Characteristics.
A MATURE fallow buck will stand 90-95cm high at the shoulder and can tip the scales at 90kg, especially when in good condition in late summer or in the early stages of the rut. Does are built much lighter, typically 75-80cm at the shoulder and around 40kg for a mature female.
Fallow have the interesting feature of coming in a wide range of colours. You have the melanistic (black) fallow who’s coats are a rich chocolate colour and the “common” colour scheme, with coats a reddish-brown colour marked with a darker dorsal stripe and white spots and underbelly. The menil colour phase is similar, although the reddish-brown coat is a lighter creamy colour. Pure white is the other colour phase.
