SO GOOD AND SO LOVED

IT’S HARD to believe we’ll never again hear his high-pitched peal of laughter. Or see the glorious smile that lit up any room he was in.

Whenever we found ourselves in uncertain times Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Mpilo Tutu was there to offer comfort. And when democracy finally arrived it was the Arch, as he was affectionately known, who coined the perfect name for the new South Africa – the Rainbow Nation.

In the wake of Nelson Mandela’s death in 2013, Tutu remained a consistent beacon of hope.

But now he too is gone.

The Arch, who passed away peacefully aged 90 on 26 December at the Oasis Care Centre in Cape Town, was given a state funeral on 1 January.

The public outpouring of grief was a testament to how much the world-renowned icon was loved. Tributes poured in from around the globe and many flocked to St George’s Cathedral where he lay in state for two days before his funeral.
