he recent article on Suffolk nicknames struck a chord with me (Country diary, 8 December 2021). After 40-plus years domiciled in Scotland, I still fondly recall the oddity and descriptiveness of family and local characters’ nicknames: my father ‘Dusty’ (obvious, miller), his brother Stanley was ‘Botner’.
