A grand mole hunter

I enjoyed David Tomlinson’s story about the mole (Viewpoint, 10 November). As a boy in rural Scotland, I often heard similar tales of dogs hunting moles. Indeed, friends told me their dog was such a hunter, but I never saw it once.

Fast forward 60 years or so and I’m in the Midlands, have a smallholding and two spaniels, sprocker Jax, 19 months, and Buzz, a five-year-old cocker. Jax was previously known as Boycie and was a family pet, but his owner was going back to work full-time and needed a new home for him. They thought he needed something to do in life and wanted him to go to a working home.
