Everyone feels down some of the time, but for some folks, positive feelings are few and surmises that excess stress hormones may lead “to damage of the hippocampus, the part of the brain essential for forming, organizing, and storing new memories,” says first author Willa Brenowitz, Ph.D., MPH, of the UCSF Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.
