It’s long been said that the best camera isn’t necessarily the one with the sharpest lens, the fastest reaction speed or the highest resolution: it’s the one you happen to have with you, regardless of its specifications. You won’t be able to take photos of impromptu events with your £2,000 digital SLR (DSLR) if you always leave it lying in a drawer at home.
It’s no surprise, then, that the vast majority of photos taken these days are snapped on a smartphone, and the market for traditional cameras is rapidly declining. In 2020, manufacturers sold around 54 per cent fewer cameras than they did the year before (see www.snipca.com/39962). Admittedly, the pandemic confined us to our homes for several months, limiting our opportunities for camera shopping – or getting out and taking photos – but that’s not the only reason the camera market is shrinking.
