Heather Royle is 74 and lives in Herefordshire despite a life-long longing to live by the sea. She is happily retired after working all her life, and married, with two grown-up sons and two grandsons. She loves writing, mostly short stories. This is her first attempt at a novel.

It was glorious1 up there on the mountain2 but quite suddenly,3 he became solemn.4 “Let’s sit here,” he said5 pulling me down onto the grass while the larks trilled musically above us.6 “I want to talk to you about something,”7 My stomach flipped8 as I did a quick calculation.9 We’d only known each other for about nine weeks; he surely wasn’t going to propose? Was he?10 “I really like you.” He said,11 “A lot. And I’d like to ask you….”12

“It’s too soon…. “I blurted.13

He looked surprised, but carried on after only a slight hesitation,14 “I’d like our relationship to become serious.
