Bound for South Australia
B ack in August 2019 MSL published my story of a trip around Tasmania which my wife Dee and I rode with long-time riding buddies Martin and Fay Silk. It was part of a longer trip, and this article describes the main part of the ride through New South Wales and Victoria.
This 2300-mile trip started at Sydney, where we picked up a pair of BMW R1200GSs before looping south and west through Bateman’s Bay, the Victorian Alps, Jindabyne, Bright, Castlemaine, through the massive sandstone ranges of the Grampians and Halls Gap to meet the Great Ocean Road on the south coast. Then we headed east along the coast to Melbourne, back north through Lakes Entrance, Cooma, over the Snowy Mountains and the Blue Mountains to Bathurst, Katoomba and Kangaroo Valley, and eventually back to Sydney.
We kicked all of this off by riding south on Princes Highway for about 20 miles before turning on to a minor road towards the coast, through the Royal National Park. It’s amazing how quickly the environment and roads changed from busy highway to bush and good riding roads. Tight, twisty
