Diagram 1/412 ‘COIL A’ wagon in ‘OO’
FIFTY underframes were diverted from vacuum braked 21-ton mineral wagon construction (Diagram 1/120) for fitting out as two-axle covered strip coil steel carriers or ‘COIL A VB’ which were later recoded as ‘COIL A’ and eventually KAV and SFV under the TOPS system. They were developed in response to the increasing demand for wagons capable of carrying strip coil and was a successful design, surviving well into the era of large air-braked steel carrying wagons, the last examples finally withdrawn and disposed of in 1992.
The diverted underframes were fitted out with a steel frame which supported a longitudinal cradle well lined with timber to protect strip coil from physical damage during loading and transit. Rails
