‘N’ gauge PCV ‘Cemflo’

TWO batches of ‘Cemflo’ bulk cement tank wagons were built between 1961 and 1965 for Associated Portland Cement Manufacturing Co (APCM), by Gloucester Carriage & Wagon Co (Diagram 6/433) and Metro-Cammell (6/430) respectively, to overcome problems with the ‘Prestflo’ type bulk powder wagons. Prestflo wagons had heavily reinforced angled hoppers which limited the pay load and caused cement powder to become caught in corners where it was not easy to dislodge during discharge due to the manner in which cement can become compacted during transit.

The aluminium bodied vacuum-braked ‘Cemflo’ wagon was different in concept, consisting of a lightweight cylindrical body which could be discharged using aeration rather than pressure, making a heavily ribbed superstructure unnecessary. The smooth cylindrical
