The first glass milk bottles started appearing in the 1880s in the UK and meant milkmen could deliver a pre-measured pint of milk to households. The clear bottles also allowed the customer to see the condition of their milk. The bottles often had the name of the dairy embossed or painted on the bottle to encourage returns, and this is one of the earliest examples of recyclable packaging in the UK.
