In the prologue to Dopesick, her 2018 book about the US opioid crisis, Beth Macy notes expert predictions that the toll of drug overdose deaths would grow by 300,000 in the following five years. That, it transpired, was optimistic. Both obscured and fuelled by the Covid-19 pandemic, America’s epidemic of overdose deaths has spiralled in the past two years. The toll in the past 12 months exceeded 100,000 for the first time. It was 63,000 when Macy’s book came out.
