I read with interest Nick Baldwin’s recent series Arran in Lockdown, and specifically the lack of help offered by some Public Record Offices. A few years ago, I was researching the gift tanks that were offered to six Hertfordshire cities and towns at the end of WW1 in 1919.

Most helpful, I found, were the voluntary ‘local history’ societies and groups that most of these places had. Though Welwyn was not one of my six, I’m sure that it had such a group. If such a society does exist, it is possible that they might know of someone whose father/mother/uncle
