GOING TRANSCONTINENTAL
Having recently read the article in February’s issue about the Ford Transcontinental, I am brimming with nostalgia and would like to tell you my story of my involvement with this mighty beast of the road.
The year is 1989 and as a 29 year old single bloke I was up for any kind of adventure that life could throw my way. Having just finished helping out my owner operator mate by driving his 1982 Volvo F12 (a beautifully delicate ride), while he recovered from a heart attack, I was between jobs and looking for my next challenge. That came when the opportunity to do somea long way down from where I was sitting in the cab. Then when he told me that the usual route taken to get to my destination was over the Alps via either the Mont Blanc or Frejus tunnels, I wondered if I wasn’t biting off more than I could chew. And if that wasn’t enough to give me the collywobbles, he also explained that in order to cut costs he’d had a secret belly tank fabricated under the trailer that held one thousand litres of ‘cherry’ (red diesel). That was enough to get me there and back once I’d bribed my way through customs in Calais and swopped the pipes over from white to red.
