My name’s Byam Keil, I like rock climbing, only when it’s extreme. —
I’m Byam’s dad, Braden Keil, and I like easy rock climbing. —
Lots of children climb with their parents. It’s common for tykes to learn the ropes and take their first steps into the Vertical Life under the tutelage of their olds. Invariably, though, the child and the parent stop climbing together. The divergence is natural, as the child feels the pull to stamp their independence, realises their parents aren’t cool. They move away, they start to build their own lives, and climbing mirrors this drift. But not the Keils, 25-year-old Byam and 57-year-old Braden, they are still each other’s No.1 climbing partner.
It seems like a beautiful relationship, something that from the outside looks to be special.
I think I have been aware of that for some time now, and I am proud of it. I am grateful and trying to make the most of it. I understand that we probably can’t get to crazy places for too much longer. — Byam
