The plans for my first big-game hunting experience were hatched on a remote beach on Mexico’s Sea of Cortez. Curious readers may find this a rather unusual setting for an introduction to hunting. However, Mexico is my home, and sport fishing is my occupation. On this particular day one of my clients and I were sight-fishing the clear waters adjacent to the beach, toes in the sand, fly rods in hand. As we patiently waited for a fish to swim within range, the conversation drifted to archery hunting, a subject which I found fascinating, though quite foreign at the time. Apparently, my curiosity struck a chord, and resulted in a most unexpected invitation.
“You should get a bow. Learn to shoot... then come to South Africa to hunt with me...”
Not being one to allow such a generous offer to go unaccepted, I purchased my first compound bow that very night.
